Sentence Completion Exercises – Answers

1. The correct answer is A.

The new sentence would be constructed as follows: Like Minnesota, Wisconsin gets extremely cold in the winter. The phrase “like Minnesota” is an adjectival phrase that modifies the noun “Wisconsin.” Therefore, “Wisconsin” must come directly after the comma.

2. The correct answer is C.

The new sentence would be constructed as follows: Yellowstone National Park is a popular tourist destination because it is rich in natural beauty and abundant in wildlife. The word “because” is used to join an independent clause to a sentence. Remember that independent clauses contain a grammatical subject and a verb and can stand alone as complete sentences. “It” is the grammatical subject in the clause of the new sentence and “is” is the verb.

3. The correct answer is D.

The new sentence would be constructed as follows: My sister, who was ill with the flu, stayed home from school. The comma after “my sister” indicates that a relative clause must be used. Remember that relative clauses include the following words: who, which, that, whom, whose.

4. The correct answer is C.

The new sentence would be constructed as follows: In the event of rain tomorrow, the picnic will have to be cancelled. The phrase “in the event of” should be followed by a noun or noun phrase.

5. The correct answer is B.

The new sentence would be constructed as follows: The team was so disappointed when it lost the championship game. Remember that “when” is used to join independent clauses to sentences. Independent clauses contain a grammatical subject (it) and a verb (lost).
